Revealed: New Official UK Queen Coin ! A first just in time for Queen’s 50th Anniversary!

50 years ago this year, a British icon was formed. Brian May, Roger Taylor, John Deacon and, of course, Freddie Mercury came together to give us the British musical treasure; Queen.

The band went on to record songs such as We Will Rock You, Bohemian Rhapsody, We are the Champions and Don’t Stop Me Now – instant classics, many of which are among our all-time favourite songs, here at Collectology and, we’re sure, across the globe.

With a tonne of iconic records, a unique sound and theatrical stage presence, it’s no surprise that Queen collectables are hugely popular – often selling for tens of thousands in auctions with one trophy even valued at £450,000!

And as Queen celebrate their 50th anniversary, it seems only fitting that The Royal Mint have decided to honour them by featuring them on a brand new coin.

A First for the UK

Incredibly this is the first time ever that a British band has been showcased on a UK coin and what a coin it is… This is the first time Chris Facey has ever designed a coin, and he’s left us with no doubt that his coins will become collectors’ favourites. The detail in this design is superb with loads of little surprises for the discerning fan.

The main focus of the design is the instruments; all four of the original line-ups iconic instruments are featured with Chris Facey having said that he “wanted to give all four band members equal billing”. Brian May’s Red Special guitar, John Deacon’s Fender Precision Bass™, Roger Taylor’s Ludwig™ bass drum and Freddie Mercury’s Bechstein™ grand piano are all there.

Within those instruments are two fantastic elements. The first sees band’s famous logo (originally designed by Freddie Mercury himself) peeping out on the front of the bass drum. And the second is our favourite part of the design, you see, the piano has the opening notes of Bohemian Rhapsody, pressed down.

Every aspect of the design has been thought about carefully so it’s only apt that it has been released in a variety of specifications. Two of which we think are going to be extremely sought-after.

The Official UK Queen Brilliant Uncirculated Five Pound Coin

Firstly we have the Official UK Queen Brilliant Uncirculated Five Pound Coin. Historically the five pound coin has been reserved for the most important royal and historical anniversaries. Commemorative coins at heart, they are very rarely found in circulation, and instead take pride of place in many collections across the nation.

Being featured on a five pound coin is a fantastic honour that has been given to very few subjects outside the Royal Family – making this five pound coin one that is sure to capture the hearts of the nation!

The Official UK Queen Silver Proof Coin

The second specification that is bound to be popular among collectors is the Silver Proof edition. Struck from 1oz of pure Silver, to a pristine Proof finish, this specification has become one of the most sought-after issues. Knowledgeable collectors are always quick to snap them up, resulting in rapid sell-outs.

What’s more, this coin is the very first UK 1oz Silver Proof Coin in history to feature colour printing – making sure it truly stands out and with just 7,500 authorised for release worldwide it’s sure to sell out fast!

Not only that, but for this specification, Facey has included a special edge inscription:  “MERCURY · MAY · TAYLOR · DEACON”, once again honouring all four original band members.

The incredible firsts behind this coin, combined with the 50th anniversary and collectability of all things Queen mean this issue is sure to have collectors singing ‘Don’t stop me now’ as they rush to secure theirs.
