Ending Pride month 2022 on a collectable high
As we draw an end to Pride Month, I thought it would be nice to reflect on what the celebration of Pride has brought us so far in 2022, reminiscing on the love and positivity it brings us, represented through collectable merchandise.
POPS! WITH PURPOSE — PRIDE COLLECTION 2022
In 2021, Funko introduced Pops! With Purpose which combines some of the world’s most beloved characters in Funko Pop! Style with causes that are important. Their Purpose Pride collection is all about inclusivity and acceptance, supporting the LGBTQ+ community and donating to the It Gets Better Project.
For 2022, they have released the special edition rainbow collectible figurines of DC’s Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn and Robin. Do you love them as much as me?
Star Wars Pride Variant Covers
At the beginning of the month, StarWars.com showcased their 2022 Pride month variant covers and I think they are beautiful! Each has been designed by LGBTQIA+ artists and displays LGBTQIA+ characters of the Star Wars galaxy. Additionally, the classic Star Wars logo is followed by a rainbow trail and the trade dress features a rainbow burst.

Transgender actress and LGBTQ+ activist, Laverne Cox, has been honoured with her own Barbie doll
Mattel, the beloved toy brand which produces Barbie’s, have commemorated Cox’s contribution to the LGBTQ+ community with a new Barbie doll made in her likeness.

This marks the FIRST TIME EVER that Barbie represents the likeness of a transgender woman and thus is a great step forward for LGBTQ+ acceptance and rights. As a young girl, I played with Barbie dolls but the only ones I can remember are the original Barbie and Ken. I had hours of fun playing with them, but it would have been great to have had more diversity within the doll designs, something that just wasn’t seen then. However, now it makes me very happy to know Barbie is progressing in the right direction, towards inclusivity.

The doll features heeled boots, silver earrings and a red tulle gown with a sparkling silver metallic bodysuit underneath. Cox came up with the layering herself after thinking of more economical ways the children could have more choices to play with.

The release is particularly important to Cox as growing up her mother did not allow her to own a Barbie as she was “assigned male at birth”. After speaking to her therapist in later years, she began to play with her own Barbie and since telling her mother this, has received Barbies for Christmas and birthdays.
