JUST RELEASED – The BRAND NEW 2022 UK 50 Years of Pride 50p Coin
On 1st July 1972, the first official Pride UK event in London took place, sparking the beginning of a major shift in LGBTQ+ rights over the decades that followed. Around 2,000 people attended that first year, a number that grew to an estimated 1.5 million people in 2019. And now in its 50th year, Pride UK is more welcomed than ever.
In honour of Pride UK’s enduring legacy, which unites communities nationwide in a colourful celebration of positivity and solidarity, The Royal Mint have issued a BRAND NEW 2022 UK 50 Years of Pride 50p. The 50p coin has been collaboratively worked on between Pride in London and The Royal Mint, allowing the spirit of Pride UK to be portrayed authentically with the help from designer Dominique Holmes (They/them).
Dominique Holmes, artist, writer, and LGBTQ+ activist, has produced an original design for this BRAND NEW 50p coin, encompassing the essence of Pride UK.
A centre rainbow is surrounded by four more iconic rainbows, promoting London’s values of Protest, Visibility, Unity and Equality. The reverse also features the Progress Pride Flag to celebrate the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community, commemorating its unbeatable spirit.
Dominique Holmes has said “The finished design encompasses everything I hoped it would from my initial concepts; I think it expresses the passion and protest of Pride within a celebratory aesthetic. I really hope it connects with people and reminds them what the movement is all about.”
